5th International Smart Grids and Cities Congress and Fair (ICSG) welcomes energy sector leaders from Turkey and all over the world in İstanbul.

ICSG Istanbul 2017 organized in Istanbul between the dates of 19- 21 April 2017, under the auspices of Republic of Turkey Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, Republic of Turkey Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Republic of Turkey Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, Republic of Turkey Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communication and supports from Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality along with ELDER Association of Distribution System Operators and many other institutions.

Speaking at the opening speech, Mehmet Ozhaseki, Turkish Minister of Environment and Urbanisation, said, smart grids would emerge when transportation, infrastructure and energy components come together among the concept of ‘smart cities’.

Abdullah Tancan, Deputy Undersecretary of Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, noted that without the measurement of the network; management, productivity and saving of resources could not be mentioned. Tancan said, that it is important to design the network with measurement and control. He also, underlined that improvement the equipment in the network in terms of measurement and control is also important.

Consumers will be able to control their consumption
Tancan draw attention to the fact that, once the grids become smarter, consumers will be able to control their own consumption and they will be able to use their energy efficiently. He said, smart grid concept develops day after day.

5th International Smart Grids and Cities Congress and Fair will welcome delegations from 50 countries. During the Congress, highly important subjects such as energy management, energy efficiency, cyber security and remote control systems, future of energy, technology in energy will be discussed in detail. The event which is signified as one of the most important ones by IEEE Power and Energy Society, is held with country partnership of Italy.

Smart electricity distribution

On the second day of the event, “Smart Electricity Distribution Grid Session” was held with the moderation of Ugur Yuksel, General Secretary of ELDER- Association of Electricity Distribution System Operators. In this session, EnerjiSA R&D Supply Chain Group Manager Alp Kaymaz, Silver Spring Networks EMEA General Manager Burak Aydin, Netas Analysis, Architecture & Project Management Senior Manager Sait Sener, Endoks Energy Managing Partner Dr. Alper Terciyanli and Electromechanical Industrialist Association (EMSAD) Representative Yusuf Donmez informed the audience about smart grids.

The participants gave information about “Turkey’s Roadmap for Transition to Smart Grids Project” (TAS2023) which is developed by DSOs in Turkey, under the presidency of Republic of Turkey Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) and coordination of ELDER.

On TAS2023 project, road map for transition to smart grids will be designed accordingly. Within the scope of this project, current knowledge of sector will be considered as a major project input with benefitting electricity distribution companies conducted R&D outputs subject to Smart Grid supported by EMRA. The project is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2017.  Turkish DSOs technological investment plan under TAS2023 for the upcoming 3 years was also explained in the session.

The speakers underlined the energy infrastructure’s safety becomes more important day by day. They pointed that EMRA, prepared a draft regulation which aims to increase the safety of critical systems in energy sector and opened to public opinion.

Customer-focused structured market

It is said that, the new electricity market will have a consumer-focused structure. It is emphasized that the beneficiary of the consumer should be the first evaluation criteria in the technological investments.

In the session, ELDER’s EU R&D Projects were also mentioned. PEAKapp is to develop, validate and launch an ICT ecosystem that motivates and supports citizens to adopt and sustain behavioral changes which will directly reduce their household energy consumption with the support of a creative smartphone application.

The other project called SmarterEMC2 implements ICT tools that support the integration of consumers through Demand Response services and the integration of DG/RES through Virtual Power Plants with a forecast module. Project supports standardization activities by proposing adaptation to data models of market-oriented and field-level standards. SmarterEMC2 has 3 real-world pilots and 3 large-scale lab simulations. The pilots are demonstrating the impact of Demand Response and Virtual Power Plants services in the real world settings.

Mustafa Yilmaz, Chairman Republic of Turkey Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA), says the planned investments in electricity will be doubled in Gaziantep, a city located in the western part of Turkey's Southeastern Anatolia Region.

In the meeting where Gaziantep’s energy infrastructure was discussed, EMRA Chairman Mustafa Yilmaz said, Gaziantep is a very dynamic city and needs more energy investment.

He said, “Gaziantep grows two times faster than Turkey and 30 times faster than Europe. Therefore, it is difficult to meet the needs of this dynamic city. We came here to see the problems. It is clear that this dynamic city needs more investment. I hope that these investments will be realized in a short period of time. " Yilmaz also noted that the planned investments in electricity for Gaziantep will be doubled.

GIS in Power Sector Management
By: Surendra Kumar Yadav

“For power sector management, selection of suitable areas, the optimum path finding, the profile analyses, the engineering design of towers and wires, and the cost estimation can be done using GIS. GIS is not only useful in developing accurate database, improve internal efficiency levels pertaining to power supply monitoring, commercial and customer services but also extremely useful for important functions like network analysis, facility management, energy audit, trouble call management, load management, theft detection etc. Digital system provides timely, accurate and easier way of acquiring information, which is very vital in taking prompt and accurate decisions necessary in the economic development of any enterprise/ industry.”
